Binovision™ in Connection with Eye Surgery Cataract or After Clear Lense Extractions
Binovision™ is a new method that allows us to correct all refractive errors (including presbyopia). Binovision™ enables stereoscopic, binocular vision in all distances. Binovision™ is performed in conjunction with eye surgery Cataract or Clear Lense Extraction with implantation of a Calhoun Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) and allows a precise result prediction. Binovision™ provides our patients with perfect near, intermediate, and distant vision without the harsh effects (halos) found in other lenses (especially multifocal lenses). With the Calhoun Light Adjustable Lens it is possible to achieve the desired target fraction with high precision. After irradiation of the operated eyes (adjustment and lock-in with the LDD device), we noticed that all patients had a perfect vision in all distances.

Our findings about Binovision™
In studies using the iTrace aberrometer, we found a strong increase in depth of field in all patients studied. We attribute this to the increase in asphericity of the lens as part of the post-treatment. These results have encouraged us to offer a new correction principle: Binovision™.
Binovision is the binocular visual spatial perception of objects in all distances. One eye is responsible for far distance and the other one for near distance. We are convinced that Binovision with the Light Adjustable Lens is currently a superior and interesting method for presbyopia correction patients (correction of presbyopia).
Light Adjustable Lens? LAL – a light-adjustable lens
What is a Light Adjustable Lens?
Calhoun Vision’s Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) from the US was co-developed by American ophthalmologist Dan Schwartz and chemist Robert Grubbs, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 2005. The special feature of the artificial lens is the extraordinary material from which it is made. It consists to a large extent of photosensitive silicone macromers. By irradiation with UV light, this material can be deformed and thus the refractive power of the lens can be changed. This gives your doctor the ability to tailor the lens to your vision needs.
What advantages does the LAL offer me?
The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the only artificial lens that gives you the best possible use of the visual potential of your eye. If you have cataract, you will undergo surgery to remove your natural cloudy lens and implant an artificial intraocular lens into the eye. However, the exact thickness of this lens can not always be determined exactly before the operation for various reasons. As a result, residual refractive errors can persist after the surgery, which must be corrected with glasses.
However, after implanting the lens, the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) allows the physician to correct the remaining refractive errors and possible astigmatism up to 2 diopters. This means that, similar to a tailor-made suit, a custom made intraocular lens is made for you.
Will I still need glasses after the treatment?
With very high probability you will not need any glasses after the eye surgery for the distance and if necessary also for the proximity. If you are affected by amblyopia, implanting the Light Adjustable Lens in place of your natural, clear lens may be useful. In some patients, this can significantly improve vision. The doctor determines the visual potential you have and whether a significant gain in visual acuity can be achieved through surgery, the doctor will determine in detail before the procedure.
How is the treatment?
The Calhoun Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is implanted in the eye instead of your natural lens. After two to three weeks you will be invited to the after-treatment in our practice. The doctor first determines your exact postoperative vision. Using a LDD (Light Delivery Devicer), the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is precisely tailored to your needs by UV light in 2-3 short after-treatments. The irradiation takes a maximum of two minutes each. They are painless and harmless to the eye, as the back of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) has a UV protective liner, so it can not damage your retina.
When adjusting the lens, both your refractive power and any astigmatism that may occur can be corrected: If the refractive power of the lens needs to be increased, the physician irradiates the central part of the Light Adjustable Lens with UV light. This will make the lens thicker in the center. The refractive power increases.
If the refractive power of the lens is too high, the edges of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) are irradiated instead of the middle. The center of the lens flattens and the refractive power is reduced. Astigmatism can also be corrected in the same way. Undesirable changes in the lens caused by the UV light from your environment must be excluded. To avoid this risk, you will be given UV protection goggles, which will be worn from the operation until the final fixation of the lens. After adjusting the lens, the fixation of your lens takes place. For this we also use the LDD device. The lens can not change anymore. Enjoy now the look you want to measure.
